Hazel Hassenbey Obituary

Hazel Lilly Hassen Bey (nee Boone) passed away on March 7, 2024, in Montclair, New Jersey, at the age of 100. She was born on September 7, 1923, in Chatham, South Carolina.
Hazel was a beloved figure known for her caring and nurturing nature. As the oldest female among nine siblings, she took on a maternal role, caring for her younger brothers and sisters with love and dedication.
Her compassionate spirit extended beyond her family, as she also played a motherly role to countless children, even going as far as buying a station wagon to transport them around. Hazel's heart was full of love, whether she was working with geriatric patients or boisterous kids, and she was cherished by all who knew her.
In her professional life, Hazel had a diverse career. She started as a beautician but had to change paths due to allergies. She then dedicated 30 years as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Preakness Hospital in Wayne, NJ, followed by another 15 years at Daughters of Israel in West Orange, NJ. Against all odds, she went to college to obtain a master's degree (MA, MS, MEng, Med, MSW, MBA), being at the time, the eldest college graduate in Essex County.
Outside of work, Hazel enjoyed various hobbies that brought her joy and fulfillment. She was an enthusiastic bowler, participating in leagues with her loved ones and volunteering to teach children how to bowl. Her dedication to the sport led her to chaperone the Junior Olympics in bowling and participate in the Senior Bowling Olympics for three decades, earning recognition for her achievements. Additionally, she found pleasure in playing Bingo and embarking on bus trips to Atlantic City. She belonged to a Senior Citizen's Group and was nominated as Montclair's Senior of the Month in March 2018. Hazel's collection of elephants, which she started at the age of 8, when she promised her father, she'd bring him home one from the circus. held a special place in her heart, symbolizing cherished memories with her family.

Hazel is survived by her daughter, Kismet, grandsons Edward, Zachary, and Dylan, as well as great- grandsons Savion, Kevion, and great-granddaughters Belle, Aurora, and Sierra. She also leaves behind two sisters, Marian Allen and Edna Richards, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Roberta and Edward Boone, four brothers, Dan, Jim, Joe, and Walter, two sisters, Bea and Mary, and her husband, Mamode.
Her legacy of love and compassion will forever be remembered by those whose lives she touched. She will be greatly missed.
